2010 Saint Louis Art Fair Jurors

Steve Teczar is an artist and Professor of Art at Maryville University of Saint Louis. In 1979 he came to Maryville from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond to serve as chair of the Art Division, later Art & Design, a position he held for 20 years. His professional work includes drawings and other works on/of paper, sculpture, mixed media pieces, collections of found materials, and site-specific installations. His works have been exhibited throughout the U.S. and abroad, and they are included in numerous public, corporate and private collections. His most recent solo exhibit Drawings and Diversions was held in 2003 at the Bonsack Gallery of John Burroughs School in St. Louis. Mr. Teczar’s teaching responsibilities include foundation drawing, figure drawing, and advanced drawing. In addition, he is an instructor in the Study Abroad Program, accompanying students to England, Spain, Greece, and, most recently, teaching Drawing in Florence in Italy 3 May – 2 June 2009. He also directs the Pre-College Art & Design Summer Program and serves as faculty advisor for the Maryville University Fine Arts Student Association. Mr. Teczar holds the M.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis, and the M.A. in Interior Design and a B.A. in Art from the University of Missouri in Columbia.

Nicario Jimenez studied sculpture at the Centro de Capacitacion Artesanal de Huamanaga and attended the Universidad Nacional San Cristobal de Huamanga in Ayacucho, Peru. Mr. Jimenez has taught and lectured at the University of Miami, the University of California, San Diego, Whittier College and American University.
Mr. Jimenez’s compositions depict religious, historical and everyday events. His hands move quickly and with confidence to fashion people, animals, and mythical figurines as he creates poignant scenes from a doughy mixture of boiled potato and gypsum powder. For his sculpting process, the only tool is a small piece of wood resembling an enlarged toothpick.
Jimenez’s one person exhibitions include the San Francisco Craft and Folk Art Museum, the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Museum of Man in San Diego, California, the North Dakota Museum of Art, and the Rhode Island School of Design. His work was selected by the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. for its "Seeds of Change" Exhibit and was subsequently purchased by the Smithsonian for its permanent collection. Jimenez's work is included in numerous prestigious public, corporate, and private collections.

David Smith is a patron of the arts and an art collector living in the St. Louis area. For many years David held the position of Vice President, Creative Development and Entertainment for SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment where he led the creative development of architects and other designers for new shows, attractions and parks both domestically and internationally. In 2008, David started his own creative and strategic planning consulting firm, Smithink. David is also Board Chairman for Cultural Festivals.

Kate Maury-Gilmore received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kansas City Art Institute and a Master of Fine Arts from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Currently she resides in St. Paul, Minnesota and teaches full-time as a Professor in the Art and Design Department at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
Her work is featured in both juried and invitational shows at regional, national and international venues. In addition Maury's work is published in contemporary ceramic art books such as Making Marks: Discovering the Ceramic Surface by Robbin Hopper, 500 Bowls, Lark Books, The Art of Contemporary American Pottery by Kevin Hluch, and High-Fire Glazes by Lark Books. She has taken part in two residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation and awarded a grant from Jingdezhen Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute to serve as Ambassador to Jingdezhen, China in the 1000 Years Celebration of Porcelain Conference and take part in their residency program.
Most recently she pursues her interests in folk art traveling extensively throughout India and China documenting local artistic practices in pottery and textiles that are integral to the cottage industries

Jerry Gilmore received his BA in Fiber and Painting from Western Washington University, Bellingham, Washington and his MFA in Painting and Drawing from Washington State University, Pullman, Washington.
Mr. Gilmore served as the Director/Curator at Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, Arvada, Colorado and prior to that was the Executive
Director/Curator at the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art Fort
Collins,Colorado.
Mr. Gilmore is currently an Independent Curator and and visual artist/writer residing in Denver, Colorado

Due to scheduling conflicts Susan will not be able to join us as a juror this year. Susan will join us in 2011 as a juror.
Dr. Susan Uchitelle is an Educational Consultant and the Chair for Confluence Academy Charter Schools in St. Louis, Missouri. Previously, she was the Executive Director of the Voluntary Interdistrict Coordinating Council, the organization that implemented the Metropolitan Interdistrict Student Transfer Program for 18 years in 24 separate school districts in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. Dr. Uchitelle and her husband Ben are credited as “Founders” of the Saint Louis Art Fair. She is a local patron and collector. |
